Care Tips for your Mermaid Tails

Now you are the proud owner of your very own mermaid tail. In order to keep it intact and beautiful for a long time, you need to follow certain instructions. On this page you will find some important care tips for your mermaid tails. With the right use and some of our tips and tricks, you will be able to use your new mermaid tail for a very long time.

Care Instructions for your Spandex Tail

While our mono fins were specifically designed for swimming, the tail skin on the other hand only consists of a swimwear fabric. It has the purpose to make you feel like a real mermaid or merman. Although manufactured with high quality durable materials, incorrect use will cause wear and tear. For example, if you accidentally kick the side of a swimming pool whilst wearing only the monofin, you will likely get away with no real damage other than light cosmetic scratch etc. The tail skin however won’t cope with this as easily. You can damage the tail skin much quicker and possibly even tear it. In summary, to keep your tail skin beautiful, there are a few important care tips and instructions to follow.

Tips to help prevent wear and tear on your tail skin

Only get changed on soft undergrounds such as a towel or yoga mat

Never stand in your mermaid tail

Avoid sitting on hard or rough surfaces

Avoid kicking the bottom or sides of the swimming pool

Don’t balance on the tips of your mermaid mono fin

After using your tail in chlorinated water or salt water, rinse it in freshwater and dry completely

Avoid direct sunlight

Additional Tips:

Always wear the tail with the zipper at the same side. Underneath the foot pockets is one of the spots where wear and tear may appear. If you change the zipper to the other side, it is more likely that you will get wear and tear on both sides of your mermaid tail skin

If you do happen to notice any wear and tear, you can mend this easily with a needle and thread or special fabric glue

If you find it difficult to follow the tips fully then an option for you could be to spread some silicone on the fabric. For example around the corners of the monofin and underneath the foot pockets (instructional video below)

There will come a time when you will want to replace your mermaid tail skin, you can purchase it here. Please note, that Mermaid Kat Shop doesn’t offer any refunds for damage resulting from wear and tear. For more information, please visit our return policy.

Care Tips for your Silicone Mermaid Tail

Compared with spandex tails, silicone mermaid tails are much stronger and tougher. The silicone is in fact much thicker than the spandex tail skin. Therefore it is much less likely for a silicone tail to get holes. Nevertheless, a silicone mermaid tail needs love and specific care. Like many materials, a silicone tail can be punctured if treated incorrectly. Please follow our care tips to reduce the risk of damage.

Put on your tail correctly

Taking care of silicone mermaid tails starts with the right method of putting it on. Use a lubricant to help put on your tail. Natural oils like coconut or olive oil are good for your skin and don’t harm the environment as much as chemical lubricants. Wet your legs with some water. Use a soft underground like a towel or yoga mat. Never try to put on your tail on hard undergrounds, such as concrete or tiles. It can damage your tail. When pulling up your tail, don’t pull on the seams or attached fins. Furthermore avoid fingernails.
